Up-and-coming Saudi Arabian track and field sprinter Sarah Al-Ablan is now targeting Olympic success after making an accelerated development from a promising university student into a national multi-time medallist runner.
The young 21-year-old competitor representing Al-Adalah Club and the national track and field team of Saudi Arabia came into her potential by mere luck in 2023 when, inspired by a gym coach at King Faisal University, she took part in the 100m race in Riyadh without having any previous athletic experience and ran it in 14.97 seconds. Her coach decided to develop her natural talent, and since then, she has been rapidly progressing in competition for three years.
Al-Ablan’s trajectory reflects the broader transformation within Saudi women’s sports. Benefiting from expanded domestic leagues, international training scholarships, and dedicated technical staff, her rise underscores how structural investment in the Kingdom is cultivating elite female athletic talent for international competition.
Following her debut, Al-Ablan secured bronze in the 400 metres at the 2025 university championships before advancing to national club meets in 2026, where she lowered her 400-metre mark to 67.30 seconds. Her international breakthrough arrived at the 2026 Gulf Universities Championship in Doha, claiming gold in both the 400 metres (63.13 seconds) and 200 meters (27.91 seconds). Testing her endurance, she also placed fourth in a 5-kilometre road race at the 2026 Al-Ahsa Runs event, clocking 24 minutes and 40 seconds.
Supported by family, Saudi national staff, Al-Adalah coach Azza Mohammed, and a 10-month training scholarship in Qatar, Al-Ablan manages rigorous athletic demands alongside her academic obligations. Facing intense training schedules and physical strain, she views her journey as part of a wider movement encouraging women to pursue sports, emphasising that personal discipline and faith-based choices, such as wearing the hijab, present no barrier to athletic excellence.
