The Indian ambassador, Vipul, visited Saudi Arabia to expand bilateral relations in trade, investment, technology, energy and sports. These are emerging key areas for deeper cooperation between both states.
Vipul, who was presented with the certificate by the Indian president Droupadi Murmu on July 31, is expected to start his mission in Riyadh. In an interview to Arab News, he said that the two countries have a lot of mutual interests and institutions that can be used to strengthen strategic relations.
The link between them has expanded tremendously in the last decade, with Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia providing more scope for Indian companies and investors. The Strategic Partnership Council, established after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s 2019 visit to New Delhi, has provided a framework for cooperation across multiple sectors.
Vipul identified investment as a major priority, pointing to opportunities for Saudi companies and the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund in India, as well as for Indian companies seeking projects in Saudi Arabia. He highlighted sectors including logistics, mining, minerals, renewable energy, tourism, entertainment, infrastructure, data centres and power.
He said the partnership now extends beyond traditional areas such as energy and trade to include technology, security, defence and culture. Artificial intelligence, in particular, is an area where he sees significant potential as the technology reshapes economies and societies.
Regional stability is another priority for New Delhi. Vipul said continued communication between the two governments is important as India maintains substantial economic and social connections with the Gulf. He stressed that peace and stability in the region are essential to India’s development interests.
Sports could also become a growing part of bilateral economic cooperation. Saudi Arabia is preparing to host the Asian Games and the FIFA World Cup in 2034, creating opportunities for infrastructure, technology and investment involving Indian companies.
Vipul, a career diplomat who previously served as India’s ambassador to Qatar from 2023 to 2026, also pointed to longstanding people-to-people links, including those associated with Hajj.
He said he expects India-Saudi relations to strengthen further across multiple sectors as both countries pursue economic growth and diversification.
