Several Houthi missile strikes have been condemned by the UN Security Council, which have attacked Saudi Arabia and ships sailing commercially. The council has also noted that the rise in aggression may escalate the situation in the region and hamper peace-making efforts in Yemen.
The Security Council is also concerned about airplanes flying to the airports of Yemen without the authorisation of the Yemeni government. Such flights were non-compliant with the regulations on civil aviation. Such incidents raised concerns regarding the security, sovereignty of Yemen and freedom of movement of ships.
According to the members of the Security Council, Houthi missile strikes targeting Saudi Arabia began on July 13, while those on ships have started since July 22.They also pointed to Iranian aircraft landing at Sana’a International Airport on July 3 and Hodeidah Airport on July 13 without the required government clearances.
The council reaffirmed Yemen’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and stressed that flights operating to Yemeni airports must receive authorization from the internationally recognised Yemeni government. At the same time, it called for reliable air access for humanitarian and civilian purposes, provided such operations comply with international law.
Members also highlighted UN Security Council Resolution 2216, which restricts the supply of weapons, military assistance, training and related financial support to individuals and groups covered by the relevant sanctions regime, including the Houthis.
The council said continued Houthi actions could threaten maritime navigation, increase the risk of further escalation and damage diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
It urged the Houthis to avoid additional escalation and use established dialogue channels to address disputes. The council also reiterated its backing for UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and his efforts to pursue an inclusive, negotiated political settlement led and owned by Yemenis.
