Saudi Arabia Promotes Scenic Overland Travel Corridors to Historic AlUla

There are several prominent overland routes that have been noted from Jeddah, Madinah, and Tabuk towards AlUla, making the overland trip part of the cultural and environmental tourism strategy of Saudi Arabia.

The extensive network of roads will provide access to the gateway cities straight into AlUla’s historic oasis. Travellers visiting Saudi Arabia will get to experience the diversity of the country’s landscape through this road network, according to Saudi Press Agency reports.

There will be abundant opportunities for travellers they can take self-drive trips to historical locations, coastlines, and volcanic formations, among others.

Each distinct travel route showcases a unique geographic and cultural cross-section of the Kingdom. The coastal corridor from Jeddah runs along the Red Sea shoreline before cutting east toward the historic valley. Meanwhile, the southern route originating in Madinah stretches across approximately 383 kilometres, guiding motorists through the volcanic fields and heritage sites of Khaybar on a four- to five-hour drive.

Travellers departing from Tabuk navigate a 295-kilometre northern corridor that cuts across open desert horizons, completing the journey in roughly four hours. Upon arrival in AlUla, the internal road network connects visitors directly to world-renowned archaeological sites, dramatic sandstone formations, and cultural venues embedded within the lush palm groves of the central oasis.

The promotion of regional overland travel aligns with broader national efforts under Vision 2030 to establish Saudi Arabia as a premier global destination. By turning transportation routes into curated tourism experiences, authorities aim to drive economic diversification, spur regional business along key highway corridors, and showcase the Kingdom’s rich heritage landscapes year-round.

Through continued investments in regional road networks, clear travel logistics, and regional infrastructure, Saudi officials are positioning road trips as an accessible, high-value component of the country’s growing leisure economy.
