There was an earthquake with magnitude 5.5 early Monday morning east of Egypt. The earthquake affected several regions in Egypt, such as the Greater Cairo region, and there have been emergency measures that were taken on the national level following this event. There are, however, no reports of casualties or any loss of property due to the earthquake.
The earthquake according to National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) that is Egyptian institute occurred at 3:00 am and the epicenter of the earthquake was about 40 kilometers north of Suez at depth of 10 km.
Although there were some differences between the magnitudes indicated by other international organisations regarding this earthquake, they agreed on the fact that the earthquake was shallow.
Residents in Cairo, the Nile Delta and several eastern governorates reported being awakened by the shaking, while people in neighbouring countries also experienced mild tremors due to the earthquake’s reach across the eastern Mediterranean. Authorities said emergency hotlines remained operational, but no widespread structural damage had been identified during initial inspections.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed ambulance services and emergency teams nationwide to remain on maximum alert as a precaution. Civil protection authorities continued monitoring the situation while engineering teams assessed public infrastructure and buildings in affected areas.
Although Egypt is not among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, seismic activity occasionally occurs because of the country’s proximity to active fault systems around the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. Experts say most tremors are minor, but authorities routinely activate preparedness plans following stronger earthquakes to ensure a rapid response if needed.
